From بیگ (beyg, titled man, chief) (from Proto-Turkic *bēg; see there for more) and the genitive enclitic -em, or perhaps from بگم (bagam, queen). Cognate with Azerbaijani bəyim, Ottoman Turkish بكم (beyim), Uzbek begim. Compare خانم (xânom).
