From Middle Persian [script needed] (wdpk' = wēwag, widow), from Proto-Iranian *HwidáwaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HwidʰáwaH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁widʰéwh₂, a derivative of the root *h₁weydʰh₁- (to separate).

Cognates include Baluchi گیوَگ (Gēwag, widow), Northern Kurdish , Ossetian и́дӕдз (ídæʒ) (<*widawačī-), Zazaki viyā, Sanskrit विधवा (vidhavā) and Younger Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬜𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀 (viδauua), English widow, Old Irish fedb, Latin vidua, and Old Church Slavonic въдова (vŭdova).
