First attested in c. 1503 as Middle Hindi بھینس (/bhē̃ns/), inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀳𑀺𑀲𑀻 (mahisī), from Sanskrit महिष (mahiṣa). Cognate with Nepali भैंसी (bha͠isī), Gujarati ભેંસ (bhẽs), Marathi म्हैस (mhais).
