Etymology 1

From a putative Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (*bwlyk' /bōrīg/) suffixed from [Book Pahlavi needed] (bwl /bōr/) becoming modern بور (bur, red, bay; blond) – compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (bwlk' /*bōrag/) reflected in modern بوره (bure, borax).

Adjective

بوری • (buri)

  1. blond
Descendants
  • Georgian: ბური (buri) Fereydan

This word is native in Ottoman Turkish بورو (boru) and Azerbaijani boru.

Alternative forms

Noun

بوری • (buri)

  1. trumpet; hunting horn
  2. point (especially of a nail)
Descendants

Etymology 3

Looks like an Aramaic borrowing of the same word that we describe under Arabic بُرْدِيّ (burdiyy). The existence of “buri mats” in the Philippines from the buri palm (Tagalog burí) must be a coincidence, unless the naming can be supposed to have been imported in a similar fashion as the name of the fibre-offering abaca plant from Arabic أَبَق (ʔabaq).

Alternative forms

  • بوریه (buriya), بوریه (buriye)

Noun

بوری • (buri)

  1. split reed; marsh reed
  2. a mat made of such reed
    Synonyms: حصیر (hasir), زیرانداز (zir-andâz)
