Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish بالطه‌جی (baltacı, hatchetman, axeman). Composed of بالطه (axe) and جی (a suffix denoting a profession or occupation). See Baltacı.

Equivalent to بلطة (bálṭa) + ـجى (-gi).
