Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀺𑀆 (vijjuliā), from Sanskrit विद्युल्लता (vidyullatā, forked lightning), from विद्युत् (vidyut, lightning) + लता (latā, creeper). Cognate with Odia ବିଜୁଳି (bijuḷi), Gujarati વીજળી (vījaḷī), Nepali बिजुली (bijulī), Assamese বিজুলী (bizuli), Punjabi ਬਿਜਲੀ (bijlī).
