Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀺𑀆 (vijjuliā), from Sanskrit विद्युल्लता (vidyullatā, “forked lightning”), from विद्युत् (vidyut, “lightning”) + लता (latā, “creeper”). Cognate with Odia ବିଜୁଳି (bijuḷi), Gujarati વીજળી (vījaḷī), Nepali बिजुली (bijulī), Assamese বিজুলী (bizuli), Punjabi ਬਿਜਲੀ (bijlī).
