Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ȫgsiŕ (orphan); equivalent to اوك (ök, breast, chest, bosom) + ـسز (-sız, -süz, -less). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰇𐰏𐰾𐰃𐰔 (ügs²iz /⁠ögsiz⁠/), Azerbaijani öksüz, Bashkir үкһеҙ (ükheź), Kazakh әкесіз (äkesız), Kyrgyz өксүз (öksüz), Tatar үксез (üksez) and Tuvan өскүс (ösküs).
