Borrowed from Aramaic אֲרִיסָא (ʾărīsā, tenant farmer), from Akkadian 𒇽𒅕𒊑𒂊𒋗 (/⁠errēšu⁠/, tenant farmer, cultivator), occupational noun of 𒀳 (/⁠erēšu⁠/, to till), hence doublet of حَرَّاث (ḥarrāṯ).
