Inherited from Middle Persian ʾmwlc-ytn' (āmurzīdan, “to forgive, to pity, to have mercy on”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥žd- (“to forgive, spare, to pity”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬲𐬛- (mərəžd-, “to have pity, to forgive”), Parthian 'mwjd, Sanskrit मृडति (mṛḍati).
