קרײַט (krayt, herb) + ־עכץ (-ekhts). קרײַט n (krayt), although itself obsolete, is cognate to German Kraut (herb), thus a doublet of קרויט (kroyt) (compare German Kraut ((Southern German, Austria) cabbage)).
