  1. For the sake (benefit or regard) of (a person or thing).
    • Isaiah 37:35, with translation of the King James Version:
      וְגַנּוֹתִי עַל הָעִיר הַזֹּאת לְהוֹשִׁיעָהּ לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן דָּוִד עַבְדִּי
      For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake
  2. With the intent or purpose of (a result).
    • Exodus 1:11, with translation of the King James Version:
      וַיָּשִׂימוּ עָלָיו שָׂרֵי מִסִּים לְמַעַן עַנֹּתוֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָם
      Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens.
