(jtrw, “river, the Nile”). The word was borrowed into Hebrew after the shift of Egyptian /t/ to /ʔ/, which is attested from the 18th Dynasty onward in the form of the alternative spelling jrw. Cognate with Demotic N36-N23⁠Z1⁠mw⁠r⁠y (yr, “river, canal”) and Coptic ⲉⲓⲟⲟⲣ (eioor, “canal”).
