Etymology 2
A Middle Iranian borrowing. Compare Parthian 𐫀𐫀𐫁𐫝𐫀𐫡 (ʾʾbcʾr), 𐫀𐫁𐫝𐫡 (ʾbcr), 𐫀𐫀𐫁𐫋𐫀𐫡 (ʾʾbjʾr /ābžār/, “materials, means”), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾp̄cʾl, ʾp̄zʾl /abzār/, “instrument, means; spice”), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫀𐫁𐫝𐫀𐫡 (ʾbcʾr /abzār/, “materials, means”), Persian ابزار (abzâr, “tool, instrument, implement, means”). Ultimately from an Iranian compound *Habí-čārna-, composed of the preverb *Habí- and the etymon of ճար (čar, “remedy, means”). Old Georgian აბჯარი (abǯari, “armour”) is borrowed from the same Iranian source. The homonymous Old Armenian աճառ (ačaṙ, “soap”) may be identical, but the sense development needs an explanation.
