From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH-.[1][2][3][4][5] The similarity with Proto-Georgian-Zan *cel- is accidental.[3]

  1. (transitive) to rend, to break, to split, to cleave, to cut, to divide lengthways
  2. (intransitive) to be torn, rent; to be split, cloven
