Etymology

Related to տորմ (torm).

Ačaṙyan rejects all proposals and leaves the origin open.

J̌ahukyan derives տարմ (tarm) and տորմ (torm) from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥ga-(s)mo- and *dorgʰ-(s)mo- respectively, from the root *dergʰ- (to grasp; to take hold of). See Pokorny for this root. Among the cognates J̌ahukyan compares especially Middle Irish dremm, Irish dream (tribe, people; bundle, handful, manipulus) (from *dr̥g-smo-), Breton dramm (sheaf), Ancient Greek δράγμα (drágma, handful; sheath).
