Etymology

From Middle Iranian, from Old Iranian *varsayāmaka- (literally hair-holder), compounded from *varsa- (hair), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wálćas (hair), and a participle of *yām- (to hold), whence Persian جامه (jâma). The compound survives in Persian باشامه (bâšâma). Akin to Old Georgian ვარშამაგი (varšamagi), Aghwan 𐕛𐔰𐔽𐔰𐕌𐔰𐕄 (vaˁamaḳ), Iranian borrowings.
