Alternative forms
- պօղ (pōġ)
Etymology
The origin is uncertain.[1]
According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps a dialectal form of փայլ (pʻayl).[2]
Related to Northern Kurdish p’el, pel, pol (“firebrand, smouldering piece of wood, charred wood, live coal; ember”), Central Kurdish پۆل (pol), پۆلوو (polû, “ember”), Kermanic [script needed] (polozm, “firebrand”).
Usage notes
The compound կայծապող (kaycapoł) is attested in the Old Armenian text Varkʻ Aberkiosi episkoposi of unknown date, corresponding to Ancient Greek σπινθήρ (spinthḗr, “spark”).
