From Old Armenian շերտ (šert). Probably a doublet of շոլտի (šolti).

1. slice; stripe, strip, streak

A word for which several Proto-Indo-European etymologies have been proposed,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] all of them irregular.[14][15][16] Unacceptable[17][18] derivations from Urartian[19] and Hittite[20] have also been suggested.

Most likely a Zan borrowing: compare Mingrelian შერტი (šerṭi), შორტი (šorṭi), შორდი (šordi), შქვერთი (škverti), Laz შორთი (şorti), Georgian შოლტი (šolṭi).

     […] asē aġuēsn ənd agṙawn, tʻē jaynd aġek ē, ayoy; zamenayn teġikʻd yawel unis tʻagaworutʻean; apay xelkʻ bnaw očʻ unis du; a; šert (var. mek šerd) panir očʻ karacʻir pahel du, zi ard kares pahel ztʻagaworutʻiwn.

     Then the fox says to the crow: "Yes, you have a good voice, and you have more than enough reason to reign; only you have absolutely no brains: you could not keep one slice of cheese, and how will you be able to keep the kingdom?"

     […] and the fox secretly says to the man: "Bring me two slices of cheese, so I will adjudicate in your favour" […]

• In the Bible, translates Ancient Greek σχίδαξ (skhídax).
• The additional sense "axe" seen by some dictionaries in the derivatives of this word is spurious.
