Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish مر (murr, bitter) + -ու (-u), the same suffix as in կծու (kcu), թթու (tʻtʻu); from Arabic مُرّ (murr, bitter). Related to Middle Armenian մուռ (muṙ, myrrh) and probably dialectal Armenian մուռ (muṙ, revenge).
