The origin is unknown. Ačaṙyan compares to Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܡܝܫ (miš, fog, mist), Akkadian 𒈪 (/⁠mūšu⁠/, night), 𒈬𒅆𒅖 (/⁠mūšiš⁠/, at night, literally as night, to be like darkness, obscuring of light or vision), Arabic مَسَاء (masāʔ, evening).
