Etymology

From Middle Armenian խարբուխ (xarbux), of unknown origin. Folk-etymologically explained as հար (har) + -բուխ (-bux) and therefore incorrectly spelled հարբուղխ, խարբուղխ (harbuġx, xarbuġx) in the past. Akin to the synonymous Georgian ხარბუხა (xarbuxa), ხარბუხი (xarbuxi), ხარბუხაჸი (xarbuxaʾi).
