կապարասի

Armenian

Etymology

A ghost word found only in Ališan[1] and copied from there by later dictionaries.[2][3][4][5] According to Ališan, կապարասի (kaparasi) is found in a medieval plant list (hin bžškaran) as a synonym of Middle Armenian քուշտ (kʻušt), կոստ (kost, costus). The bžškaran in question is probably Tʻargmanutʻiwn dełocʻ, one of whose manuscripts has կապարասի (kaparasi) glossing Arabic այլաթուս (aylatʻus),[6] which other manuscripts explain by քապար (kʻapar, caper). This կապարասի (kaparasi) should be corrected to կապար ասի (kapar asi, is called caper). The reading կապարասի (kaparasi) and the meaning of "costus" are due to confusion.
