Etymology

The root is խած- (xac-), from Proto-Indo-European (according to Godel *khad-ye-), + -ան- (-an-). Cognates include Sanskrit खादति (khā́dati, to chew, bite, eat, devour), Avestan 𐬬𐬍-𐬑𐬀𐬛𐬀- (vī-xada-, to squeeze apart), Persian خاییدن (xâyidan, to gnaw, chew). See also խայթ (xaytʻ).
