Etymology
The root is խած- (xac-), from Proto-Indo-European (according to Godel *khad-ye-), + -ան- (-an-). Cognates include Sanskrit खादति (khā́dati, “to chew, bite, eat, devour”), Avestan 𐬬𐬍-𐬑𐬀𐬛𐬀- (vī-xada-, “to squeeze apart”), Persian خاییدن (xâyidan, “to gnaw, chew”). See also խայթ (xaytʻ).
