Onomatopoeic. Possibly formed already in Proto-Indo-European: compare Ancient Greek καχάζω (kakházō), καγχάξω (kankháxō), Latin cachinno, Proto-West Germanic *kahhattjan, Old Church Slavonic хохотати (xoxotati) and Sanskrit कखति (kakhati), कक्खति (kakkhati).
