From earlier *թումբուկ (*tʻumbuk), from a Middle Iranian word of the shape *tumbūk. Compare Middle Persian [script needed] (twmbk' /⁠tumbag⁠/, perhaps tambour), Persian تنبک (tonbak, tombak).
