The origin is unknown. Possibly connected with the synonymous words in West Asian languages: Arabic زُعْرُور (zuʕrūr) or زَعْرُور (zaʕrūr); Georgian ზღმარტლი (zɣmarṭli) and its Kartvelian cognates; Persian ازگیل (azgil)
