From Middle Persian gys (gēs, “curl, locks”). Compare Persian گیس (gis), گیسو (gisu, “ringlet of hair, forelock, sidelock, curl”), Ossetian хъис (qis, “bristle”), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬎- (gaēsu-, “curls”).
