Etymology

The origin is uncertain.[1] Ačarean rejects the similarity with Sogdian 𐫃𐫡𐫏𐫐 (gryk /ɣrēk/, earth, dust) from Proto-Indo-European *gleh₁y- (clay) as coincidental.[1]

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *weryo-, from *weh₁r- (water), whence for example Sanskrit वार् (vār, water).[2][3][4][5]

Noun
