From Iranian. Compare Middle Persian bʾc (bāǰ, “tribute, tax”), from Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎪𐎶 (b-a-ji-m /bāji/, “tribute, toll”); see there for more. Etymologically related to other Iranian borrowings: բաժանեմ (bažanem, “to divide”) and բաժակ (bažak, “cup”).
