Etymology

Because of the prothetic ա- (a-) borrowed via Middle Median, from Proto-Iranian *sparah (shield), whence also Middle Persian [script needed] (spl /⁠spar⁠/), Persian سپر (separ). The form borrowed via Parthian, *սպար (*spar), survives in compounds սպարակիր (sparakir) and սպարափակ (sparapʻak).
