Etymology

Probably borrowed from an unknown descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros. Has also been linked with Sumerian 𒀀𒃼 (A.GAR3), 𒅊 (AGAR4 /agar/, field). Yet another proposal derives the word from Hurrian 𒀀𒉿𒊑𒉿 (a-wi-ri-we /awari-/, field).
