Etymology

From Urartian 𒆳𒁉𒀀𒄿𒈾 (KUR.bi-a-i-na /Biaina/, the Bia Lands), 𒆳𒁉𒀀𒄿𒉌𒇷 (KUR.bi-a-i-ni-li /Biainili/), the self-designation of Urartians. Van, called Tušpa back then, was the capital of Urartu. The derivation from վան (van, abode, house) is less likely.
