Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *kay- (“turn; pay attention”), as attested in Middle Turkic qay- "~to pay attention; be compassionate", Yakut хайыс- (qayıs-, “to turn”), Khakas хайарға (xayarğa, “to pay attention”), Turkish kayırmak (“to protect, favor”).
