Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *jovtams, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *jupta-~*jukta- (“to speak, to tell”). Cognate with Finnish juttu (“talk; thing; affair”), jutella (“to chat”), Estonian ütlema (“to say; pronounce”), Livonian jutlõ.

      Jovtaś isťažo ťenst pŕitča-jak: većevi-ľi sokorneń sokorś? apriť-ľi siń kavtńest latks?
      He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?”
