Inherited from Old East Slavic ѩзꙑчьникъ (języčĭnikŭ), from ѩзꙑкъ (językŭ, “tongue; nation”). Modeled on Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos, “nation”) : ἐθνικός (ethnikós, “heathen”).
