юнец

Bulgarian

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *junь̀cь (youth). It is possible for the accent to shift from the second to the first syllable, for reasons unexplained.

Cognate with Russian юне́ц (junéc).

Pronunciation

  • (юне́ц): IPA(key): [jo̟ˈnɛt͡s]
  • (ю́нец): IPA(key): [ˈju̟nɛt͡s]

Noun

юне́ц or ю́нец • (junéc or júnec) m (feminine юни́ца)

  1. young ox
    Hypernym: вол (vol, ox)

Usage notes

Sources disagree on which syllable should be stressed: Rečnik na bǎlgarskija ezik maintains it be the first, whereas Bǎlgarski tǎlkoven rečnik posits the second, which also appears to accord with the Proto-Slavic etymon *junь̀cь.

Declension

  • Although in the singular forms, either the first or second syllable may be stressed, in the (non-count) plural, it is always the second.
