Older ши́льда (šílʹda) + -ик (-ik), ultimately from Middle High German schilt. The older terms ши́льда (šílʹda) and шильд (šilʹd) have been discontinued in standard Russian. Compare modern Ukrainian шильд (šylʹd), Belarusian шы́льда (šýlʹda), Polish szyld.
