Etymology
From Persian شترنگ (šatrang, “shatranj”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ctlng /čatrang/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
Cognate with Kalmyk шатр (şatr), found as early as Middle Mongol as شطرنجين (“šaṭranjin”, genitive singular).
