From Proto-Mordvinic *čəva~*šəva, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *čupa (lean, thin). Cognate with Moksha шуваня (šuvańa), Finnish hupa, huvi, Estonian and Veps huba, Hungarian sovány.
