From Proto-Turkic *jar (bat) + *Kājnat (wing). Alternatively explained as Proto-Turkic *jarɨ-Kiajnat (membrane-wing). Cognate to Shor чарғанат, Khakas чарханат (çarxanat), Yakut сарыы кынат (sarıı kınat), Karaim jarkanat, Karakalpak jarg'anat, Nogai ярганат (yarganat), Kyrgyz жарганат (jarganat), Southern Altai јарганат (ǰarganat), etc.
