Borrowed from Russian те́фтели (téfteli), from а Yiddish distortion of Romanian chifteluță, diminutive of chiftea, from Ottoman Turkish کوفته (Turkish köfte), from Persian کوفته (kufte, “kofta”); cognate with Bulgarian кюфте (kjufte), Serbo-Croatian ћуфтa, Armenian քյուֆթա (kʿyuftʿa), Azerbaijani küftə, Arabic كفتة (kuftah), Greek κεφτές (keftés).
