Of Kipchak origin, from Proto-Turkic *tamga (stamp, brand). Direct cognate with Tatar тамга (tamga), Bashkir тамға (tamğa), Kazakh таңба (tañba), Old East Slavic тамъга (tamŭga, stigma) and further akin with Turkish damga, Turkmen тагма, Mongolian тамга (tamga). From the same origin as the Ottoman loanword дамга́ (damgá, seal).
