Etymology
From earlier Old East Slavic *съпаси богъ (*sŭpasi bogŭ, “God save (you)”) (modern Ukrainian спаси́ Бог (spasý Boh) or спаси́ Біг (spasý Bih)). Compare Belarusian спасі́ба (spasíba) and Russian спаси́бо (spasíbo). Also compare the etymological development of English goodbye.
