Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic сусѣдъ (susědŭ, “neighbor”), from Proto-Slavic *sǫsědъ, deverbative of *sъsěděti (“sit together”). The prefix су- (su-) was replaced with productive verbal со- (so-); compare dialectal сусе́д (suséd). By surface analysis, со- (so-) + сиде́ть (sidétʹ).
