Inherited from Proto-Slavic *solvъ. Cognate with Russian Old Church Slavonic славоочиѥ (slavoočije, blue-gray (of eyes)), and more distantly with Proto-Germanic *salwaz (gray, muddy) (whence English sallow). Ultimately related to Russian солове́й (solovéj, nightingale).
