From Proto-Mongolic *solagaï. Compare Buryat hалгай (halgaj), as well as Kazakh солақай (solaqai, “left-handed”), Bashkir һулаҡай (hulaqay, “left-handed”), Azerbaijani solaxay (“left-handed”), Tuvan солагай (solagay, “left, left-handed”).
