Inherited from Bulgar بىر (bîr, “one”),[1] itself inherited from Proto-Turkic *bīr (“one”).[2][3]
Cognate with Khalaj bî, Turkish bir, Uzbek bir, Bashkir бер (ber) and Yakut биир (biir).
