подлинный

Russian

Etymology

Unidentified form; usually associated with по́длинник (pódlinnik, long pole) (see длина́ (dliná, length)), on the supposed basis that during court punishment people were beaten with "по́длинники" ("pódlinniki", long poles) to obtain the truth; according to an alternative version, it is a derivative secondary adjective with the suffix -ный (-nyj) from the root *подьлинъ (*podĭlinŭ), a primary adjective from подьлъ (podĭlŭ, lying at the bottom, on the bottom)"; according to another version, it is derived from the root of the prepositional-case combination по длине́ (po dliné), with an assumed primary meaning of "corresponding to the specified length".
