Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic падежь (padežĭ), from Proto-Slavic *padežь. Equivalent to па́д- (pád-) + іж (iž). Cognate with Russian падёж (padjóž), Bulgarian паде́ж (padéž), Serbo-Croatian па́деж, Old Church Slavonic падежь (padežĭ).
