Inherited from Old Ruthenian олѣ́й (olě́j, olive oil, vegetable oil), from Old East Slavic олѣи (olěi, olive oil), from Proto-Slavic *olějь, from Ancient Greek ἔλαιον (élaion) or Latin oleum. Doublet of єле́й (jeléj)

Cognate with Belarusian алей (aljej), Bulgarian елей (elej), Lower Sorbian wolej, Polish olej, Slovene olje, Upper Sorbian wolij.
